Sir:-

With reference to our communication of the 12th

August and your reply thereto on the 3rd September

last, we have received a further communication from our

member, Captain H.W.Holmes concerning a case of con-

templated piracy on board his steamer "Tal On" which

has happily been frustrated.

As Captain Holmes in his communication to us (copy

of which we enclose) gives full details of what actually

happened, there is no need for us to reiterate the facts

as contained in his report. We are further advised by

our Representative at Hong Kong that on the arrival of

the "Tai On" at that port, passengers were allowed to

land without being searched, although after they had

left the vessel some twelve revolvers fully loaded were

found hidden away in different parts of the ship.

We

he Under Secretary of State

for Foreign Affairs.
